Records shattered at Iowa Beef Expo

DES MOINES —Records were shattered at the 2012 Iowa Beef Expo with gross sales of $2.3 million. The event, held Feb. 12 to 19 at the Iowa State fairgrounds, attracted 300 consignors. Five breed sales had an $8,000 or higher top selling bull and six breed sales had a $6,000 or higher top selling female.

The Iowa Angus Sale took top honors for both high sellers. CJ Ragin Rosa 35X, consigned by Courtney Jass of Garner, sold to Ron Buch of Luzerne for $23,500, shattered the record as the highest selling female in Iowa Beef Expo history. The top selling bull was O'Neills Leaders, consigned by O'Neill Angus Farm of Logan, it sold to Leader Associates, Freeman, S.D., for $21,000.

In the Angus Show, CJ Ragin Rosa 35X, was the grand champion female. The reserve champion Angus female, Burns Elba 1128, was exhibited by Burns Angus, Oxford. Bruhn Angus, Manning, exhibited the grand champion Angus bull, BA Net Profit 101. The reserve champion bull, RLM Mr Business 11Y, was exhibited by Reed McCormick, Pleasantville.

Simmental: The Mark of Genetic Excellence Simmental Sale raised many bidder cards capturing both second high sellers. The second high selling female, Long's Miss Sweet Treat, was consigned by Long's Simmental/Cody Long of Creston, and sold to Tim and Tyler Lowden for $17,000. She tied for fourth place female in the history of the Iowa Beef Expo. The second high selling bull was FITZ Swag Y601, consigned by Fitzsimmons Simmentals of Vail, selling for $15,000 to Larry Hindman/Lamar Farms of Radcliffe.

Charolais: In the Charolais Show grand champion bull was TR EJD Mr. Oahe Monti 119, exhibited by Dodge Charolais, Newton. Reserve champion bull, WF Bronco 141 Pld, was exhibited by Wakefield Farms, Albert Lea, Minn. The grand champion and reserve champion purebred females were exhibited by LaFraise Farms of Flanagan, Ill. The grand champion percentage heifer was shown by J and S Rance, Koshkonong, Mo., and the reserve grand champion percentage heifer was exhibited by J & A Charolais, Sparta, Wis.

In the Charolais Sale the high selling bull was TR EJD Mr. Oahe Montie 119. The animal was consigned by Dodge Charolais, Newton, and sold to Eickhoff Farm, Verdon, Neb., for $5,250. The high selling Charolais female, FaFraise Laney 799, sold for $5,000. The animal was consigned by LaFraise Farms, Flannagan, Ill., and sold to Umbaugh Charolais of Adair.

Shorthorn: There was tie for top selling Shorthorn bull. DRM Phineas 104, consigned by Mason Mitchell of Nashua, and ROCA Big Red Badger, consigned by Roca Shorthorns of Clarksville, both sold for $7,500. Hi-View and Gordon's Ferry Farm of Lancaster, Wis., bought Phineas, and Fletcher Farms, Wapello purchased ROCA Big Red Badger. High selling female, LHMN Charming Valerie ET sold for $4,500. The heifer was consigned by Lehman Shorthorns, Reedsburg, Wis., and sold to Payton Riviera, Durant.

Red Angus: High selling Red Angus bull, Wyatt's Jackhammer 15Y, consigned by Wyatt Walden/Wright Farms, New London, sold to Hall Red Angus, Stapleton, Neb. for $8,000. High selling Red Angus female, MWFS Yalinda 102Y, consigned by Meado-West Farms, Menominee, Wis., sold to KD Farms, Culver, Ind.

Gelbvieh: The high selling Gelbvieh bull, RNBG 75Y1, consigned by Holste's Triple H Farms, Clarinda, sold for $4,700 to Duane Hosek, Clutier. The high selling female, SVVG Glory ET, consigned by Saur's Valley View Farms, Utica, Minn., sold to Larry Kapinus, Prairie Du Chien, Wis., for $7,200.

Limousin: The grand champion Limousin bull, JBV Believe It 025X, was exhibited by Jim and Becky Venner, Breda. Reserve was Schilling's Youngstown, exhibited by Clay Schilling, Edson, Kan. Grand Champion Lim-Flex bull, RGMA Yukon 8376Y, was exhibited by Anderson Limousin, Garner. Reserve Lim-Flex bull, SEEE Yearly Event, was shown by Scott Edwards, Higginsville, Mo. Grand champion Limousin female was SL Suki's Hot Tamale, exhibited by Straight Limousin, Logan. Reserve Limousin female was VL Yvonne 128Y, shown by Vorthmann Limousin, Treynor. Grand champion Lim-Flex female, JONF100X, was exhibited by Jon Freed, Fairbury, Ill. Reserve Lim-Flex female, Sprng Crks Kandy Kiss, was shown by Spring Creeks Cattle Co., Wauzeka, Wis. High selling Limousin bull, JBV Believe It, consigned by Venner Limousin, Breda, sold for $9,000 to Sedlacek Limousin of Tyndall, S.D. High selling Limousin female, SL Suki's Hot Tamale, consigned by Straight Limousin, Logan, sold for $7,000 to Kaiser Limousin Farms, Wells, Minn.

Lowline: In the Lowline show, grand champion bull, DD Billie 024X, was exhibited by Danilson Farms, Jefferson, S.D. Champion Lowline female, Bar J Nellie 3N1-0X8, was exhibited by Bar J Ranch, Brooten, Minn. High selling Lowline bull was DD Billie )24X, consigned by Danilson Farms, Jefferson, S.D., sold for $3,400 to Ronnie Neill, Shelbyville, Mo. Top selling Lowline female, Bar J Nellie 3N1-0X8, consigned by Bar J Ranch, Brooten, Minn., sold to Rockin' B, Needville, Texas.

Salers: The high selling Salers bull, STP Dark Horse, consigned by T-Bone Cattle, Allerton, was sold for $4,500 to Dean Leith, Creston. There was a tie for high selling female. LMB Yoo-Hoo 115Y, consigned by White Oak Salers, Fremont, sold for $3,000 to Silver Spur Salers, Maryville, Mo., as did WPS Blk Pld Daisy C4Y, consigned by Wolff Polled Salers, Aplington, and sold to Alyce Johnson, Wellsburg.

Hereford: High selling Hereford bull, SL T44 Excel 06, consigned by Steven Landt Herefords, Union, sold for $8,100 to Owego Stock Farm, Argyle, Wis., and Sandrock Ranch, Benton, Wis. High selling Hereford female, DEP Ms Isabel T16 ET, consigned by WEB Cows Deppe Brothers, Maquoketa, sold for $6,800 to Casey Wiedel, Hebron, Neb.

Chianina: Grand champion bull in the Chianina Show was Crown on the Rocks, exhibited by AC Cattle Co., Hoskins, Neb. Reserve champion bull was KBSC M&M 57Y, exhibited by Bremer Show Cattle, Blakesburg. Grand champion Chianina female was BSC My Girl 30Y, exhibited by Braun Show Cattle, Northwood. Reserve champion female, KBSC Katie 25Y, was exhibited by Bremer Show Cattle, Blakesburg. Top selling Chianina bull, Crown on the Rocks, consigned by AC Cattle, Hoskins, Neb., sold for $3,200 to Randy Bair, Braddyville. High selling female, Staley 511Y, consigned by Staley Show Cattle, Charter Oak sold for $3,500 to Phil Moore, Earlham.

Maine Anjou: The grand champion Maine Anjou bull, BSC Yogi 65Y, wasexhibited by Braun Show Cattle, Northwood. The Reserve champion bull, Oppys Wrangler 109Y, was exhibited by JD Opperman Family, Manning. The Grand champion Maine Anjou female, BTLR Radiant 12Y, and reserve champion, BTLR Marlee 11Y, were both exhibited by Butler Maines, Northwood. The Grand champion Mainetainer bull, B4 Hank, was exhibited by B4 Cattle Co., Blairstown. Reserve champion was VL Mr Cunia, exhibited by Vander Linden Farms, Prairie City. The grand champion Mainetainer Female, BJW Yori 121Y, was exhibited by Luke Worden, Belmond. Reserve champion was Cowpower 418Y, exhibited by Nelson Cattle Company, Denison.

High selling Maine Anjou bull, Oppys Wrangler 109Y, was consigned by JD Opperman Family, Manning, sold for $4,000 to Kody Schwarze, Valmeyer, Ill. High selling female, JTE Gracie 780X, consigned by Mallory Espencheid, Traer, sold for $4,600 to Wes Stolee, Radcliff.

Livestock judging

Winning the senior college division of the Iowa Beef Expo Judging Contest was the Iowa state University team of Hunter Shoemaker, Troy Sloan, Tyler

Stutsman and Colby Taber won the senior college division judging contest. Adam Darrington, ISU, was top individual.

For 4-H and FFA, the high overall team was Rock Island County, Ill. Goodhue County, Minn., 4-H with Ryan Stehr, Taylor Waugh, Stacy Glaess and Kasey Glaess was second and Marion County 4-H with Bailey Core, Kiley Elder, Hagen Fouch and Keegan Vander Molen was third.

Junior Show winners

The Iowa Beef Expo Junior Show Champion Commercial Heifer was exhibited by Kendall Shaw, Ogden. Reserve Commercial Heifer was shown by Maddy Udell, Sioux City. The top five overall breeding heifers were first, Cole Greiman, Garner, Angus; second, Collin Swanson, Peterson, Simmental-High Percentage; third, Kendall Shaw, Ogden, Commercial; fourth, Luke Elder, Woodbine, Chianina; and fifth, Kyle Greiman, Garner, Maine-High Percentage. Champion Crossbred Steer was shown by Gracie Russell, Prescott. Reserve Crossbred Steer was shown by Trace Ticknor, Bridgewater. The top five overall market animals were first, Gracie Russell, Crossbred; second, Trace Ticknor, reserve Crossbred; third, Hagen Fouch, Pleasantville, Chianina; fourth, Dustin Lund, Corning, Maine; and fifth, Dustin Lund, market heifer.

Champion market heifer was shown by Dustin Lund and the reserve champion heifer was shown by Kade Killmer, Perry.
