ROCHESTER, Minn. — Olmsted County Pork Producers will serve delicious pulled pork sandwiches on March 24.
Sandwich sales begin around 11 a.m. and run until 2 p.m. or until the sandwiches are gone, said Olmsted County Pork Producers president Myrna Welter of Stewartville.
Sandwiches will sell for $3.00 each.
"This is the second biggest fund raiser that we do," Welter said, only the Olmsted County Fair is bigger.
2010 Olmsted County Pork Ambassador Kevin Welter may be serving sandwiches.
The money raised from sandwich sales goes back to the community. The pork producers contribute to Channel One Food Shelf, 4-H, FFA and Ag in the Classroom. Olmsted County Pork Producers have also partnered with their collegues in Fillmore and Mower counties in a promotion, Pork Racing at Deer Creek Speedway.
Last year, the pork producers grilled 250 pounds of pork and served 900 sandwiches on pork day at the speedway, Welter said. Deer Creek ran pork on their menu that night and handed out pork racing T-shirts all year. The promotion also includes Pork signage on Highway 63.
This year, pork producers will serve sandwiches on Aug. 21, Pork Racing Day at Deer Creek Speedway, she said.
The pork producers also do grocery store promotions, handing out coupons for pork purchases.
Last year, they grilled pork burgers the weekend before the Fourth of July at the Fareway grocery store in Stewartville. Fareway sold the burgers for 50 cents each. The pork producers grilled 800 to 900 pork burgers, Welter said.
She and her son Jason, the 2010 Minnesota State Pork Ambassador, had a little fun on Valentine's Day, offering a "Valenswine" Story Hour at the Stewartville Public Library. They read stories about pigs and pork, did a craft, and share their love for pigs with the kids.
