North Iowa young people to represent Iowa at National FFA Convention

INDIANAPOLIS — Several North Iowa FFA chapters are taking part in Career Development events at the National FFA Convention at Indianapolis Oct. 24 to 27.
Oelwein FFA is sending a team to participate in a new event, Vet Science No. 2. Team members are Rachel Wright, Aimee Byerly, Celia da Silva and Alexis Borman. Their FFA advisors are Scott Smalley, Lindsey Crawford and Dianne Loughren. This event consists of students identifying various breeds of animals, equipment and parasites.
St. Ansgar FFA's Ag Mechanics Team will compete at the national convention. Team members are Ryan Bissen, Jessie Gerdes, Matt Levan and Ben Weis, alternate. Hunter Thome was on the state-winning team, but is not attending due to a football conflict. Andy Johnson is FFA advisor.
South Winneshiek FFA at Calmar will compete in Dairy Cattle. Team members are Cassidy Buddenberg, Karla Hageman, Ben Hanson and Mariah Schmitt. FFA advisor is Melissa Brincks.
Little Switzerland FFA at Waukon will compete in Milk Quality and Products. Team members are Shelby Bodley, Shaylie Stortz, Riley Bodley and Krystal Johnson. Jessica O'Connor is FFA advisor.
South O'Brien FFA at Paullina will compete in Meats Evaluation. Team members are Austin Rohrs, Eric Koehlmoos, Libby Wagner and Andrew Richter. Their FFA advisor is Eric Kumm.
South O'Brien team members have practiced about two hours each morning before school for the past month to prepare for the career development event, Kumm said. They have been working on learning to identify new cuts of meat and an area that isn't part of the state event, cooking methods for each cut.
Trevor Fannon of Edgewood Colesburg FFA will represent the state in Creed Speaking. He is a sophomore and won the state contest in April
Hudson FFA member Stefanie Newhouse is competing in Job Interview. She is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Drew Mogler of West Lyon FFA at Inwood will represent Iowa in Prepared Public Speaking.
The Riceville FFA Envirothon team will compete in Environmental Science and Natural Resources. Last April,Riceville FFA members Sam Back, Myranda Bartels, Ethan Bauer, John Green and Kenny Linkenmeyer were third place FFA team in the State Envirothon competition, said Riceville FFA advisor Jim Green.
As the top FFA teams in the Envirothon competition, East Marshall FFA and Des Moines Central Campus FFA were to represent Iowa in theNational FFA Environmental Science and Natural Resources Event and theNational FFA Forestry, respectively, Green said, but East Marshall FFA withdrew because of a possiblefootball playoff conflict. Since the Riceville FFA was the third place team, they took East Marshall's place.
Because of other commitments, Sam Back, Ethan Bauer and Kenny Linkenmeyer won't compete. Jacob Back and Ryan Drilling will join Bartels and John Green as replacements, Green said.
Wapsie Valley FFA at Fairbank will compete in Parliamentary Procedure. Team members are Lauren Ambrosy, Shereese Folsom, Sydney Cindrich, Brianna Cook, Adam Bodensteiner, Adam Joerger, Garett Hagenow and Alex Schmitz. The FFA advisor is Ellen Doese. Wapsie Valley FFA is also in charge of the Iowa Display which will showcase Iowa agriculture.
