CEDAR FALLS, Iowa —The Iowa Holstein Association recognized four members at its recent convention.
David Joachim of Waverly was honored with the Master Breeder Award.
Joakim and his wife, Janet, started dairying in 1974 by taking over the family operation when David's parents and grandparents were killed in a car accident. The Joakims eventually tripled the acreage and doubled the herd.
David has bred seven cows that produced more than 200,000 pounds of milk, 73 cows with over 100,000 pounds of milk, 34 Excellent cows and four Dams of Merit.
One of the many highlights of the Futurehart Holstein herd was the great "E" family. Futurehart Sexation Echo 93-2E went on to become Honorable Mention Junior All-American in 1990, and her daughter Future-Ernlo B-Star Edge 94-3E was the Grand Champion at the 1996 Iowa State Fair.
The Joakims always loved exhibiting Holsteins with their three children, Amy, Emily, and John. Through the years, they have had three All-Iowa, one Reserve All-Iowa, 16 Junior All-Iowa and 10 Reserve Junior All-Iowa winners.
The couple decided that with the herd looking great, the time had arrived to make some time for themselves and their grandchildren. They dispersed their herd on June 7, 2008. They have received 11 Progressive Breeders Registry Awards and 15 Progressive Genetics Herd Awards.
David has beenactive at the state, district and local levels of the Iowa Holstein Association. He was president, board member, and chairman of various standing committees. He has been president of the Bremer County DHIA Board and AMPI Regional District vice president. He also has served on the Iowa PDCC and Farmers Coop Board.
David and Janet remain active in the Iowa Holstein Association. They volunteer at county and state fairs, and Janet is in the dairy princess program.
Leroy Eggink received the Hall of Fame Award from the Iowa Holstein Association Auxiliary. He and his wife, Kolette, and their children Sara and Jacob, milk registered Holsteins near Sibley. The family enjoys showing cattle.
Eggink has served in leadership roles in the Iowa Holstein Association and the local DHIA board. He serves on the Iowa State Dairy Association board, and has been active with AMPI, his dairy cooperative.
He is a member of the board of director of the National Holstein Association.
Jason and Sara Menne of West Union were honored as the Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder.
The couple farm in partnership with Jason's parents, Richard and Kathy Menne. Their milking herd consists of 46 registered and 25 grade Holsteins along with five Jerseys which are Sara's project.
Jason was introduced to registered Holsteins through Bill and Kathy Langreck of Creek Holsteins. The couple purchased embryos from Langrecks, and Creek Durham Sandi was the result of one of those embryos. Sandi had three of her bulls go into AI.
They have purchased several Holsteins locally and from dispersals. One animal purchased was Creek Decision Dorothea. She scored VG-88 with sons being sold to bull studs. Another herd favorite is Poly-Kow Stormatic Julie VG-85.
Jason breeds his Holsteins for great type, longevity, production and index. He bred his first homebred Excellent cow, Sar-Jas Freelance Staci who was scored EX-90 during the August 2008 classification. Their current BAA is 107 and the herd has +1481 CTPI.
Jason has been active with Holstein activities at the state, district and county levels. He is currently serving on the state sale committee and is a co-chair for this year's state show. He has served on the District 1 Holstein Board and chaired the District 1 Holstein Show.
Jason and Sara are the parents of 3 1/2 year old twins, Ariana and Kalvin.
