Iowa FFA members excel at national convention

INDIANAPOLIS — Kelly Einck of South O'Brien FFA at Paullina placed 2nd Gold in the Agriscience Fair at the National FFA Convention held last week in Indianapolis.
Einck's project, "Cellulosic Ethanol Production Using Streptococcus Gallyticus in an Artificial Rumen," was in Environmental Services/Natural Resource Systems, Division 2.
Dylan Riedemann, also from South O'Brien FFA, placed 9th Silver in the Agriscience Fair. His project, "Piggy Power," was in Power, Structural and Technical Systems, Division 1.
South O'Brien FFA members Eric Koehlmoos, Karlene Negus and Evan Magnussen also participated in the Agriscience Fair. The South O'Brien FFA advisor is Eric Kumm.
South Winneshiek FFA at Calmar finished third in the National FFA Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management Career Development Event.
Team members are Cassidy Buddenberg, Benjamin Hanson, Karla Hageman and Mariah Schmitt. Karla Hageman was fifth individual and Cassidy Buddenberg was eighth. They received cash awards recognizing their success in the event. Their advisor is Melissa Brincks.
The National FFA Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management CDE is a competitive event that tests the student's ability to select and manage quality dairy cattle. Event components include six classes of dairy cattle, herd record evaluation and dairy management team activity.
St. Ansgar FFA finished ninth in the National FFA Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems CDE. Team members are Ryan Bissen, Jessie Gerdes, Matt Levan and Ben Weis. Their FFA advisor is Andy Johnson.
The National FFA Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems CDE allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations. Activities included in the event are a written exam, a team event, demonstration of problem-solving skills, and hands-on performance activities.
Areas of emphasis include environmental and natural resource systems, machinery and equipment systems, structural systems, energy systems and electrical systems.
