SPRINGFIELD, Minn. --Tommy Buesing grew up in southwest Minnesota and began his food service career at 14 when he started washing dishes at Valhalla Steakhouse on Lake Shetek.
He majored in hospitality and business at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall and has been running restaurants ever since.
T-Tommy's Mill Street Grille in Currie is a popular stop for locals and folks visiting the lake. Tommy's Central Street Steakhouse in Springfield celebrates its second anniversary on Dec. 1.
Buesing was recruited by members of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce to open a steakhouse in town, said his wife, Angela Buesing.
The building, the former home of the Victorian Gardens Restaurant, was on the market for two years and the chamber wanted to fill the void on Central Street.
Buesing was impressed with the location and the restaurant's condition. After a little remodeling -- additional kitchen equipment, an additional restroom and cosmetic work to part of the building -- Tommy's Central Street Steakhouse opened.
The steakhouse is decorated with historic photos of Springfield. Angela said guests often look for faces they recognize in the photo of the community band or stare back in time at the machinery parade down Central Street.
Angela has worked in the restaurant business off and on since she was 18. She does the books and payroll for the two restaurants, while Tommy does the ordering. They have a cook and wait staff for a total of 16 employees at Springfield.
"We're very fortunate we have a very wonderful staff at Springfield," Angela said.
Tommy and Angela do just about whatever needs to be done for their restaurants.
"I enjoy the people," Angela said. "I enjoy that there's always something to do."
Tommy's steakhouse offers a family friendly casual dining experience, she said. They have six different steaks on the menu, plus kabobs. On Saturday, they feature prime rib. The restaurant offers full bar service.
New this month is a Lutefisk buffet. Every Tuesday night through December, diners will be able to get their fill of lutefisk, Swedish meatballs, creamed cabbage, lefsa and real mashed potatoes, plus ham and shrimp for $14.99.
The lunchtime soup and salad buffet, featuring homemade soup, is also popular. Tommy's began offering lunch Dec. 1, 2008, and lunch menus are coming soon.
The $3.99 children's menu features mini-corn dogs, grilled cheese, chicken strips, butterfly shrimp and fish nuggets. Children may also order the buffet.
The community has been supportive of the steakhouse, with people traveling from at least 30 miles away to dine at Tommy's. They also have customers who dine at Tommy's on a regular basis.
Tommy's Central Street Steakhouse can seat 114. Private parties for groups of 40 or more can be arranged. The last two years, Tommy's has hosted the Springfield prom banquet.
