FERGUS FALLS, Minn. — It's the perfect pairing at Cafe 116 in Fergus Falls.
Jennifer Davis and Greg Stumbo have combined their talents to offer diners a flavorful feast of food and robust coffees.
Their partnership is fairly new. They opened Cafe 116 last September. But each is experienced in their area of the business.
Prior to the partnership, Davis owned and operated Union Cafe on the city's north end. Through the business she met Stumbo who roasts and blends coffee beans in a hobby-turned-business.
Davis knew she needed a new location. Her cafe was located in the middle of a strip mall and was difficult to see from the street. Stumbo was also looking to expand his business and had considered opening a coffeeshop. Instead they worked together and chose a downtown location. The new spot is in a well traveled part of town next to downtown.
It's name is the street number of the Union Avenue cafe.
Just as she did with her former business, Davis makes everything from scratch including egg salad, her salad offerings and balsamic vinaigrette. Seeking a better and larger location for her business, Davis and Stumbo decided
All breads are made locally at Fergus Falls' Falls Baking Company which features artesian breads.
The business has a complete menu with items to fit every part of the day.
Breakfasts are served from the business' opening until 11:30, she said. Davis uses locally grown eggs from Bluebird Gardens near Fergus Falls. She offers a Breakfast Burrito which is grilled and filled with scrambled egg, cheddar cheese and bacon for $4.75. The Harvest Eggs is made with three scrambled eggs, sautéed onions, bacon, green peppers and corn served with a side of wheat or white toast for $4.75.
Available anytime are cold and hot panini grilled sandwiches. Customers can order either half or hole sandwiches. Each offering is served with a side of chips, raw veggies or choice of salad.
The Reuben is the only menu sandwich not named after a Fergus Falls street, Davis said. The Summit is filled with turkey, bacon, avocado and Mayo. The Union is a roast beef sandwich with gorgonzola cheese, cucumbers, horseradish and mayo. The Beech is a vegetarian offering with baby Swiss cheese, veggies and Balsamic vinaigrette.
Hot sandwiches include The Laurel made with chicken and provolone cheese with pesto.
Davis' salads are flavor-filled. The tuna, bean and lemon salad is made with albacore tuna with garbanzo beans, celery, sweet onion and cherry tomatoes in a dressing of mayo, Dijon mustard and lemon zest for $5.45.
The Sesame noodle and sugar snap pea salad is a feast of snap peas, carrots, peppers, green onions and noodles tossed with sesame oil, soy sauce, lime juice, rice vinegar and fresh garlic and ginger.
A perfect compliment to any meal or dessert or by itself is a cup of Stumbeano's coffee or specialty drinks.
Stumbo has been roasting and blending coffee beans for several years. What started as a hobby is now a business and it's obvious he's enjoying this new venture. He offers the traditional coffees from espresso to Americano, breve, cappuccino and latte. Customers can also order the "Buckup", a bottomless cup of coffee for only $1.
Teas are also offered. The loose-leaf teas are selected from TeaSource and include green oolong, black, herbal and tisane and chai teas. Blended drinks, smoothies and sodas are available including fruit smoothies, ice blended coffee drinks, Italian milkshakes and steamers.
Cafe 116 has a selection of beers from small breweries, British Isle pub beers and wines from sustainable-minded, biodynamic vineyards.
The unique restaurant is open seven days a week and is located at 116 Union.
